UMTS Mobile Phone Takes Shape
The third mobile telephone generation, Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), is waiting in the wings. Through a strategic alliance, Siemens and Japan's NEC, in Tokyo, want to establish a joint venture to speed up the introduction of UMTS. The joint venture plans to start developing a uniform platform for the UMTS telecommunications system this year. The goal is to unify frequency division duplex (FDD) and time division duplex (TDD), the two technologies used for the air interface between the base station and mobile phone. Achieving this objective will make NEC and Siemens the only companies in the world capable of supporting both UMTS modes from the very outset-an important precondition for being able to offer powerful systems for voice and data services.
