SEOUL, Korea - June 23, 2000 - Korean technology is behind a unique digital camera phone, allowing mobile phone users to snap pictures at will. Samsung Electronics completed development of a flip-open mobile handset that comes with a 1.5-inch TFT-LCD and has digital camera functions built in.
The unit can take 20 pictures at 350,000-pixel resolution in Regular Mode and 26 pictures in Conserve Mode. A macro (Text Mode) function allows the user to take clear photographs of written text. Standard accessories include a CD-ROM for picture editing and a data cable to connect the phone to a PC.
The camera phone allows people to be ready to record any emergency (such as a traffic accident) or unexpected circumstance that they want to capture. The user does not even need to have film on hand.
The product is expected to be well received by the younger generations, who are accustomed to using digital cameras, and by young parents of small children. A color graphic interface has been achieved with the use of a color TFT-LCD, setting the SCH-V200 apart from mobile handsets with a black-and-white LCD.
To take pictures, the user presses the Camera Mode button on the side of the unit. A camera lens is located on the upper backside of the phone, and the subject captured by the lens is displayed on the TFT-LCD. Once the subject has been framed correctly, the user presses the shutter button on the bottom of the TFT-LCD.
With the high-capacity batteries, the SCH-V200 delivers 170 minutes of continuous talk time and 180 hours on standby. The battery will last for up to 200 minutes during picture taking. The unit measures 119mm x 47mm x 23.5mm and comes with a built-in phone directory, vibration alert and privacy protection function. The phone comes in either silver or khaki.
The Camera Phone is the fifth multi-function hand-held phone developed by Samsung, after the Internet Phone, MP3 Phone, Watch Phone and TV Phone. The company continues to explore new ways to apply its advanced digital technology to maintain its industry-leading position and make life a little easier for consumers. The SCH-V200 will be available in Korea in June.

- Miniature, high-performance TV receiver and antenna - 1.8-inch high-resolution TFT-LCD - Can be viewed for Up to 3 Hrs
Korean technology has resulted in the world's first combination TV/mobile phone unit, allowing users to talk as well as to watch sports, dramas, variety shows and other programs while on the move.
Samsung Electronics has mounted a 1.8-inch high-resolution TFT-LCD on a folder-type mobile phone handset and built in a miniature TV receiver, providing mobility to both telephone and TV access. Development of the SCH-M220 TV phone is complete, and company officials say it will be available in Korea early next year.
Samsung's TV phone represents the convergence of miniature mobile phone technology, TV reception technology and sophisticated display technology. The SCH-M220 features a high-performance antenna that can receive both mobile phone signals and TV signals. The phone circuitry has been integrated as tightly as possible, and the TV receiver is incredibly small. As a result, the size and functions of a conventional folder-type mobile phone have been maintained.
Product Details
In designing the TV phone, Samsung engineers came up with an optimal battery capable of powering both the TV and high-performance TFT-LCD. Interference between the electromagnetic emissions from the TV and wireless phone was minimized, and special switching technology solved the problem of having two functions in one antenna.
The TV operates on just 3 volts of power but delivers the same picture quality as a portable TV using 9 volts. VHF and UHF reception is also possible. With the high-capacity battery, continuous talk time is up to 170 minutes, and standby is 180 hours. The TV can be viewed for up to 200 minutes on a single battery charge.
The SCH-M220 comes in metallic silver, providing a sophisticated, 21st century image. Samsung Electronics came out with an Internet phone, Watch Phone and MP3 phone in this year. This track record makes Samsung the leader in multipurpose mobile phones. The TV phone will also give the company an edge in the market through mobile phone digital convergence.

Handset and System for IMT-2000
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has become the world's first to complete development of technology for all aspects of the IMT-2000 wireless service. This includes Base Station System (BSS), Mobile Switching Center (MSC) and other system hardware as well as handsets for high-speed packet data and moving picture data transmission and core semiconductor chips.
Features of IMT-2000 Handset
The IMT-2000 handset developed by Samsung can transmit packet data at 144Kbps, some ten times faster than that of conventional wireless handsets can. When the data is compressed in a packet form, transmission efficiency can be further increased from 4 to 400 times.
A more advanced model can transmit moving picture data at 15-20 frames per second, fast enough for high quality video through video on demand services and hi-fi music. In addition, digital cameras can be hooked up to the handset so users can take pictures at any location and send the images wirelessly to wherever they want.
Samsung has designed its IMT-2000 handset to be as efficient in power consumption as possible. It features standby time that is about 2.5 times longer than that found on a regular CDMA handset. The new product also has a talk-time that is 1.5 times longer.
The handsets for high-speed packet data will weigh 60-70g, while those for moving picture transmission are expected to weigh in at 90g. In the near future, lighter batteries will allow for the design of smaller and lighter handsets. Samsung plans to develop CDMA and IMT-2000 dual-mode products that are smaller and lighter than anything available today.
Details of IMT-2000 System Development
Samsung Electronics' IMT-2000 hardware is based on IS-2000 standards. Thus, it can be adopted directly by CDMA service providers. The cdma2000 system can accommodate around twice as much in voice capacity than current CDMA systems can. The system backbone is based on asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology, enabling multimedia service capability (voice, high-speed packet data, graphics, still pictures and moving pictures).
Current CDMA service operates at 800MHz (cellular), 1.8GHz (PCS) and 1.9GHz (PCS in the US), while IMT-2000 will operate in the 2GHz range. Samsung's hardware can accommodate all these frequencies, which means it takes full advantage of networks that have already been established, minimizing new investment. Samsung has also developed the channel modem card, a core component, giving the company a greater price advantage that is expected to boost domestic and export sales.
Samsung Electronics' IMT-2000 Strategy
Samsung Electronics will link its IMT-2000 technical expertise to its overall marketing program to secure a leading position in the world IMT-2000 market, which will begin to form in mid-2000. Therefore, Samsung is scheduled to have commercialized products available in the second half of 2000
Will be available in the near future.
Internet Phone revolutionized communication by being the first CDMA phone and PC-free Internet terminal
Use a multi-function wireless phone to attend Christian of Buddhist services, or expand your mind from atop the highest mountain peaks via Internet chatting. Samsung Electronics' lastest offering is a novel concept that combines Internet access and PDA functions with a cellular phone.
The new product was developed to stimulate slumping sales in Korea due to market saturation.
A team of 110 Samsung Electronics researchers spent three years and US$4.6 million to develop this "Internet Phone." Ericsson displayed a similar product at this year's CeBIT show in Hanover, Germany and has announced plans to commercialize it early next year, meaning that Samsung is about one year ahead in the race to market. Samsung forecasts sales of 1 million Internet phones at home and abroad this year.
The Product
The Internet phone can access the Internet without a personal computer. It comes with a large( 30 x 70 mm ) touch screen and features and electronics notebook, PC data interface, character recognition, and wireless fax. In addition to the conventional function of mobile voice transmission, the Internet phone has a large- capacity PDA capability that can transmit written data.
The memory can store 2,000 addresses, schedules for up to one year, and as many as 100 memos at a time. Moreover, there's an 80,000-word English-Korean dictionary, a 50,000-word Korean-English dictionary, and an engineering calculator that does trigonometry, exponential functions, and statistics. A Bible/Christian hymnal and Buddhist Canon/songbook are built in, as are electronic games such as Tetris and word puzzles. The unit can also exchange data with a PC and verify the numbers of incoming calls.
New Technology
n the course of developing the Internet phone, Samsung Electronics acquired the technology that convert text and graphic data to message data so it treated just as the same way as voice data, and it created function that alerts the user of an incoming call while the electronic another function in use. Samsung has in fact applied for 52 patents related to technology and functions for the Internet Phone. Samsung's exclusive character-recognition technology is 98% accurate with Korean and 95% accurate with English.
A standard internet protocol is built in, so users can access the Internet by simply selecting the e-mail or web browser icon on the startup screen. A hypertext function connects the search function to both the English-Korean and Korean-English dictionaries, so that if a users does not understand the meaning of a word, he/she can simply touch it to get to equivalent in another language. The short message service allows the user to write and send messages or pictures.
