Third Generation - personal, multimedia mobile communications
In September 1998, the first call using a Third Generation Nokia terminal was made on a test network in Japan. Nokia had reached an important milestone on its road to Third Generation mobile telephony! By 2001, the first commercial Third Generation mobile network will be launched, and the world will be introduced to digital mobile multimedia communications.
In 36, applications are the key
3rd Generation technology is thrusting ahead the convergence of services, triggering a revolution in personal communications more profound than any since the invention of the telephone.
With wireless communications, data communications and the Internet coming ever closer together, the world is evolving quickly towards the Mobile Information Society.
In the very near future, most personal communications - phonecalls, data images and live video - will be wireless.
The new Mobile Information Society will be driven by applications, not technology. Open-standard-based technologies will combine to enable the creation of an IP platform on which a vast range of new services and applications can be built. So more importantly than technology compatibility, the focus will be on information compatibility.
At the same time, the 3rd Generation will open up new opportunities for network operators, bring new players such as content providers into the Mobile Multimedia market, and offer end-users new services and applications - many of them as yet inconceivable today - that enhance their personal and business lives.
