New Internet Appliance
19 May 2000 08:00 EST

There is a new Internet Appliance out that if marketed properly, could steal a lot of thunder from the Gateway/AOL alliance and the "Not Happening" Apple unit.

The Epods unit is going to be marketed the same way that the hugely popular George Foreman Grilling Machine was marketed, Infomercial and direct marketing.

The Epod is a pen based touch screen unit about the size of a magazine running Windows CE. Features include:32bit RISC Processor129 MHz MIPS-basedRAM: 16MBROM: 16MBFlash Memory: 8MB You can add more if desired8.2" High Quality Color LCD (DSTN)640 by 480 Resolution with 256 colorsTwo USB Ports You can plug in accessories such as a keyboard or printer.Standard Serial Port You can use a mouse or add other specific accessories.IrDA 1.1 Your unit has an infrared port, which means you can do wireless printing with special infrared printers.DC-IN Jack8-hour Rechargeable NiMHOn-screen KeyboardPCMCIA Type II SlotCF Type II Slot56K V.90 modem

The Epods unit costs US$199 with a US$25 Internet access charge per month. We like the looks and features of the Epod, the PCMCIA slot could easily accept a wireless card making it the perfect unit for lazy days on the sofa. We do wish that you could purchase the unit separately without the monthly Internet access. Last, it is (unfortunately) running the wrong operating system.
